What is American Heart Month? The month of February is dedicated to raising awareness about heart disease and increasing knowledge about prevention. Educate yourself on the dangers of heart disease and follow some simple tips to keep your heart healthy! This month the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Million Hearts® are encouraging Americans to know their blood pressure, and if it’s high, to make control their goal.
Why the observance? Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Every year, 1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease.
How can I be involved? Make blood pressure control your goal! First, it’s important to talk to your doctor and ask what your blood pressure should be. Together, discuss a healthy goal to lower your blood pressure. Second, if you take blood pressure medicine make sure that you are taking it timely and as directed. People who currently smoke should strive to quit and if you don’t smoke avoid starting. Another way to lower your blood pressure is to reduce your sodium intake.
