For back-to-school season, Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer focuses on what students and parents might not know about the uncommon but serious disease.
Meningitis is an acute inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord and can potentially be life threatening. Freda appeared on the Sept. 17 episode of the daytime medical talk show to share tips for teens and young adults to help identify and change behaviors that can lead to the spread of bacteria that can cause meningitis.
“[Back to school] is a great transition time to check in with your doctor or with a college health center to find out if there are any vaccinations or boosters that would be right for you,” advised Freda, noting that it is is also important for parents to get involved. “Talk to your young people about these risks.”
