This story is about an 82-year-old grandmother of eight who quickly became the “it girl” on campus after returning to college..
The Get Old effort will help Pfizer achieve Imperative 3: Earn Greater Respect From Society. The goal is to inspire and activate people of all ages to reconsider what it means to get old and to change perceptions about aging at every stage of life.
Frances Wood, also known as Granny Franny, began taking courses at MidAmerica Nazarene University, a liberal arts college near Kansas City (which offers free tuition to students over the age of 65) as a way to meet new people and cope with the passing of her husband of 59 years. What she didn’t anticipate was becoming an instant celebrity on campus, being named “Honorary Homecoming Granny” at the annual event and being thrown a surprise birthday party by a new circle of friends 60 years her junior.
“I needed something different to do … and this is different,” Wood recently told the “Today” show. “You could have never scripted this … it’s been great.”
