In partnership with the YMCA of the USA, the Prevnar 13 team has launched a healthy living plan for adults.
In 2015, adults aged 50 and older are expected to make up 45 percent of the American population. Individuals in this group also have a 70 percent chance of developing at least one chronic disease, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. Even people who already practice healthy habits should be aware of things that may affect their health because, as people age, their immune systems naturally begin to weaken. One of the most beneficial things people can do is to try to prevent illness by getting regular screenings and vaccinations. In fact, the majority of people who die from vaccine-preventable diseases in the U.S. every year are adults.
To encourage healthy aging among this population, the U.S. Prevnar 13 team is working with the YMCA of the USA (Y-USA) to launch 50 Moving Forward, a healthy living plan for adults aged 50 and older. The initiative is intended to motivate participants with fresh ideas about behaviors that experts say are crucial to healthy aging, such as physical activity, preventive measures like screenings and vaccinations, healthy eating, and social interaction.
“Every year, hundreds of thousands of American adults are hospitalized with diseases like influenza, shingles, and pneumococcus that could have been prevented by vaccination, and many may not realize they need to be vaccinated as they age,” said Susan Silbermann, President, Pfizer Vaccines. “That’s why 50 Moving Forward goes beyond the basic tenets of physical activity and healthy eating and highlights the importance of helping prevent health problems before they arise through screenings and vaccinations.”
Over a six-month period, 50 Moving Forward participants will:
Learn how to make healthy lifestyle choices
Get information on proactive measures they can take to help prevent disease, such as talking with their doctor about getting regular health screenings and keeping vaccinations current
Experience a wide range of health and wellness activities like walking clubs, healthy cooking classes and dinners, bowling, bike excursions, and line dancing
“Pfizer has always supported healthy aging initiatives that encourage proactive disease prevention,” said Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer Freda Lewis-Hall. “With 50 Moving Forward, we have an opportunity to specifically educate adults 50 and older on health and wellness, including prevention, in a way that will engage and inspire them to get healthy and stay healthy.” (In this video, Lewis-Hall explains how the 50 Moving Forward initiative demonstrates Pfizer’s continued commitment to improving health and well-being and encourages Pfizer employees 50 and older to participate in the program.)
Both YMCA members and nonmembers may join 50 Moving Forward, and those who sign up will have access to a supportive community that will help them set and accomplish personal health goals. Adults 50 years and older can register online at YMCA.net/50MovingForward and through 25 YMCA associations, which represent more than 60 participating locations, across the country.
